Frater Barrabbas's Hierarchy of Elemental Emperors & Grand Dukes from the Ars Theurgia Goetia (with sigils)

Frater Barrabbas’s Hierarchy of Elemental Emperors & Grand Dukes from the Ars Theurgia Goetia (with sigils)

“As we have seen, the sixteen elementals are associated with the tarot’s sixtteen court cards, representing a kind of feudal hierarchy. Yet there is another hierarchy that we can associate with the elemental spirits, one that comes from the early Renaissance grimoire, the Theurgua-Goetia. I have incorporated this lore to provide a spirit name for focus and as a way of bringing the elemental correspondences together…The spirits of the Theurgua-Goetia…are reputed to be wind demons arrayed in a hierarchical structure…believed to consist of both good and evil entities…it must be assumed such a power is actually neutral…Thus, it is up to the Witch who unleashes this spirit whether it will do good or evil…Therefore, in examining the qualities of the sixteen elementals, we will merge the lore of the Spirits of the Theurgua-Goetia with that of the sixteen court cards and the sixteen elemental energy fields.”

~Fratar Barrabbas

Honestly it sounds :banana::banana: to me, but it is interesting, and the text / sigils from the Ars Theurgia Goetia itself are certainly worth looking at. As are the invocations from The Stenographia (via The Goetia of Dr. Rudd).

The Four Elemental Emperors

“…to work this system of magic using these spirits, you should always invoke the four Emperors as part of the ritual structure and then the established spiritual hierarchy below them.”

~Fratar Barrabbas

The Sixteen Elemental Grand Dukes

Note that all correspondences and associations come from Fratar Barrabbas, and all seals come from The Ars Theurgia Goetia, or The Goetia of Dr. Rudd. The “Sixteen Elemental Grand Dukes” of Barrabbas do NOT share equal status in The Ars Theurgia Goetia! Nearly all are Princes (indicated by a circle around their sigil), while one (Godiel) is a Servant Duke.

I strongly suspect this was an error on Frater Barrabbas’s part, and that he intended to enlist Prince Gediel not Duke Godiel.

Is it common for elemental spirits in traditional grimoires to have “El” at the end of their names? Normally, that is something that applies to Angels.

I do not believe that these are really elementals, at least not in the sense the Frater Barrabbas is pushing them to be. I’m reading more now.

I wonder why this simple arrangement was not attractive

“The Offices of these Spirits are all one, for what one commands, the other can do the same, they can show & discover all things that are hid or done in the World, & can fetch & carry, & do any thing that is to be done, or is contained in any of the four Elements, Fire, Air, Earth or Water, &c: also the Secrets of any person whatsoever, let it be in what kind it will.”

There is a “Prayer to be said before the calling forth of Elemental or Infernal Powers,
or Spirits of Darkness” in the Ars Theurgia Goetia. The Conjuration of Caspiel suggests that he is a fallen angel. Though, I suppose every spirit was viewed as an angel or a fallen angel at that time?

We Conjure thee, thou mighty & potent Prince Caspiel, who is a great & chief Emperor, ruling in the South, who bears rule by the power of the supreme God EI, over all Spirits both Superior & Inferior of the Infernal Orders &c: We Command you by the especial & truest Name of your God, and by that God you worship & obey, & by the Seal of your Creation, & by the most mighty & powerful name of God Iehovah Tetragrammaton, who cast you out of Heaven, with all other [of] the Infernal Spirits…through the power of God EI, who created & disposeth of all things, both Celestial, Aerial, Terrestrial & Infernal.

I don’t quite believe so. I think De Occulta Philosophia may make that clearer. But I recall in Key of Solomon, it spoke of the danger of taking treasures out of the Earth without a specific invocation, because the spirits of the Earth (Elemental Spirits) will cause harm to them taking the treasures or precious metals. I don’t think the text spoke of them as either Angels or Fall Angels. So, I don’t think everyone considered the Elemental Spirits to be either Angels or Demons. But it makes sense to me that a Fallen Angel, when cast out of Heaven, could be seen to descend to the Elemental World, rather than straight down to the Infernal.

Very interesting. I suspect that, as I said above, they may have seen that some Fallen Angels inhabit the Elemental World. In which case, they are higher than the Demons of the Goetia (If they are meant to be infernal) as an example, and a little closer to God than those below them (Including Humans, if they are Aerial spirits or such).

That does appear to be the case, at least as far as the literature is concerned:
